Find Tissue-Specific Expression Pattern for Any Gene

Tissue-specific expression pattern can provide important insights regarding gene function. Data sets that cover gene expression across multiple tissues are often dubbed as "gene atlas". Imagine you know nothing about a gene, you can probably gain some biological insights about its function just by looking at its expression pattern across many tissues.  Here are some examples.

 

Since it is only expressed in ES cells from mouse atlas data, anyone can tell that Nanog probably is important for ES cell function. Results from a separate data set of human ES and iPS expression show that it is highly expressed in ES and iPS cells, but not in fibroblast. And lastly you can use the correlation tools to find other genes that share similar profile as Nanog.

 

 

Similarly, as you can guess from its name, NeuroD1 is almost exclusively expressed in neuronal tissues. Here we can actually look at its tissue-specific expression pattern across three large data sets in human and mouse tissues, and reach the same conclusion.

Lastly, let's look at the NCI 60 cancer cell line panel. You can see that CEACAM5 is highly expressed in tumor cell lines from colon, lung and prostate cancer origin. Indeed, CEACAM5 is one of the human genes which encode carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-related cell adhesion proteins. CEA is an important tumor marker. In adults, CEA is expressed only in cancer cells, especially adenocarcinomas. You can also view CEACAM5 expression from normal and cancer tissues side by side.
